The All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) hailed the Speaker of Parliament Deshamanya Karu Jayasuriya on 16 November for his courageous stand โagainst anti-democratic forcesโ. ACMC also calls to initiate a high level inquiry on 16 November incidents.
โACMC hails bravery of the Speaker of Parliament Deshamanya Karu Jayasuriya who dared violence against our august House that sprung today. This violence was the most shameful conduct seen in our Parliament to-date and a red letter day for the decorum of our Parliament. We Thank Speaker (Deshamanya) Jayasuriya for saving our Democracy from the brinkโ said the Leader of ACMC Rishad Bathiudeen MP immediately after leaving the House on 16 November.
โWe condemn attacks on our Speaker and call for high level inquiry on this conduct. ACMC always stands up for individual freedom and free and fair conduct of MPs. That is a cornerstone of Parliamentary Democracy that has never been violated since independence. Therefore todayโs violent events in Parliament brings our august House to its lowest point in its history since independence and also international disreputeโ ACMC Leader Bathiudeen MP added.
ACMC has no less than five Parliamentary MPs in the Sri Lankan Parliament.
